Un militar estadounidense se hizo viral en los últimos días al relatar el sistema de bajo costo que Ucrania construyó con tecnología convencional para detectar los ataques rusos.
La guerra en Ucrania lleva ya dos años: algo más de 25 meses desde que Rusia invadió Ucrania con pretextos varios y la sumió en un conflicto bélico que no parece tener un final cercano.
Desde entonces, la tecnología de relativamente baja sofisticación ha jugado un papel importante en el ejército ucraniano a la hora de defender su territorio del ataque ruso: desde usar reportes de tránsito en Google Maps para detectar la presencia de tropas rusas hasta interferir en la señal de GPS local para desorientar a los drones autónomos (y a vuelos comerciales), pasando por usar antenas Starlink para mantenerse conectados y transformar cualquier drone, militar o civil, como un arma de supervisión, ataque y defensa.
Ahora se suma una nueva historia al anecdotario de la guerra: esta semana se viralizó un video de una charla que brindó el general James Hecker, jefe de la Fuerza Aérea de EE.UU. en Europa, en el que menciona el ingenio ucraniano para montar sistemas de defensa de bajo costo.
Según explicó, las fuerzas ucranianas montaron una red de detección de drones, que por su tamaño y capacidad de vuelo bajo a veces pueden pasar desapercibidos por los radares convencionales.
Esa red consiste en 8000 smartphones atados a un palo, un árbol o un poste de luz, en cuya punta está instalado un micrófono: este permite detectar el ruido de los rotores del drone, y puede ser monitoreado a distancia gracias a la conexión 4G que brinda el celular. Esa señal sonora se pasa por un filtro de inteligencia artificial para distinguirla de otros sonidos (un auto que pasa, por ejemplo) y se integra con el resto de los sistemas de defensa del ejército ucraniano.
A este sistema de bajo costo (unos 500 dólares cada punto de monitoreo acústico, según el militar estadounidense) o se sumará ahora, según el Kyiv Post, una segunda generación de monitoreo, llamada Zvook, que usará equipos más especializados para instalar unos 12.000 sensores en la frontera ucraniana y podrá detectar drones volando a 5 kilómetros de distancia, además de misiles de todo tipo. Es una primera señal de alarma para darle tiempo a otros sensores (radares especializados) a enfocarse en la zona, detectarlos, y permitir la acción de algún sistema de defensa local.
Según detalló Hecker en su charla, en un día del que fue testigo se neutralizaron 80 de 84 ataques detectados con este sistema, que usa tecnología convencional de bajo costo para montar un sistema de defensa de alta actividad.
